"Patients ran through halls and stairwells, room to room. One started a fire in the basement bathroom and a second, numbed and thoughtless, tossed paper into the flames, and then suddenly, because the annex and main Institute basement were one and the same, an explosion rocked the foundation. Perhaps vials and pulverized chemicals fed the growing blaze until everything boomed, and then the first floor blew out, and everyone leapt through now empty window frames, Humberto hurling himself onto the curb, where he wrapped his face in a jacket and braced himself for some second boom.
